Nonsurgical Treatment

  • Splint: A splint is often used for the first few days because of normal swelling. The splint holds the broken pieces together while the bone heals.
  • Cast: After the initial swelling has reduced, a cast is used to hold the bone in the correct position. This may be changed after 2 to 3 weeks as swelling is further reduced.
  • X-ray monitoring: Your wrist will need to be X-rayed every week for 3 weeks and again at 6 weeks to confirm proper alignment. If your wrist is ever out of line, you will need surgery to correct it.
  • Physical therapy: After 6 weeks, your cast will be removed, and you will begin physical therapy to restore strength and mobility.

Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment will be recommended when closed reduction cannot be used to realign the broken bones and/or if a cast cannot keep the bones properly aligned. Severe fractures that involve multiple bone fragments will likely need fixation to keep the bones aligned. A combination of the following surgical treatments may be used:

  • Open reduction: The surgeon will carefully access the bones through surgical incisions to realign them.
  • Metal pins: These are often used for children with growing bones
  • Metal plates and screws: These are often used to hold the bone pieces after an open reduction.
  • External fixator: This is a metal frame that fits outside of the skin and holds the bones together.
