Karl C. Saunders, M.D., F.A.C.S.
President of Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville Arthritis Care, Joint Replacement Surgery, Hand Surgery, Fractures, and Sports Injuries
Dr. Karl Saunders oversees the business operations and general management of Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville. He has been with the practice since 1981 and has served as president since 1993.
Dr. Saunders graduated with honors from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, earned his Doctor of Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and obtained his Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Saunders has a special interest in the care of arthritis, joint replacement surgery, hand surgery, and sports injuries. He is also a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and a member of the Ohio State Medical Association.
Dr. Saunders has a special interest in martial arts and music.
William D. Allen, M.D.
Hip, Knee, & Shoulder Replacement, Hand, Foot, and Ankle Surgery, Fractures and Arthroscopy.
Dr. William Allen has been in practice at Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville since his arrival here in 1991. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery, practicing General Orthopaedic Surgery with interests in hip, knee & shoulder replacement, hand and foot & ankle surgery, fractures and arthroscopy.
He obtained his undergraduate B.S. degree in Biology from Westminster College in 1982, and received his M.D. degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1986. He then completed an internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Akron General Medical Center and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron, Ohio.
Dr. Allen is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a former examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a board member of Quality Care Partners and Ohio Integrated Care Partners.
Dr. Allen has been a team physician for local high school football programs since 1991, initially at West Muskingum High School for 15 years and then at Tri Valley High School since. He enjoys mentoring & teaching, and is actively involved with students from P.A., P.T., P.T.A., & nursing programs.
He and his wife have four children. They are very active members of North Terrace Church of Christ in Zanesville, have been 4H advisors for over 10 years, and have hosted a number of exchange students.
Being an avid runner, he has competed in many local races and marathons throughout the country. His other hobbies include boating, skiing, camping and traveling with his family, automotive repairs & restoration, construction & woodworking, and being a hobby farmer.
Steven H. Kimberly, M.D.
Total Joint Replacements, Partial Knee Replacements, Carpal Tunnel, and Fracture Care
Dr. Steven Kimberly completed his undergraduate degree at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Kimberly received his Doctor of Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, graduating Cum Laude. He completed his residency in the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Surgery Program and has been with Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville since 1995.
Kimberly specializes in general orthopaedics, total joint replacements, including partial knee replacements, carpal tunnel and fracture care. Dr. Kimberly is also a member of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society, a member of the Ohio State Medical Association and a fellow for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
He and his wife have two children and are active members of First Christian Church in Zanesville.
Brad E. Brautigan, M.D.
Total Joint Replacement of the Shoulder, Hip, and Knee, Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair, ACL Reconstruction, and Sports Injuries
Dr. Brad Brautigan has more than 15 years of experience in the medical field and has been with Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville since 2000. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from West Virginia Wesleyan College. He graduated Doctor of Medicine in 1994 from West Virginia University. Brautigan completed his orthopaedic residency at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio, and his sports medicine fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Brautigan is a member of the Ohio State Medical Association and a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic surgeons.
Samuel A. Finck, D.O.
Sports Medicine, Sports Injuries, Reconstructive Surgery and General Orthopaedics
Dr. Samuel Finck joined Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville, Inc. in August 2010. Dr. Finck earned his Bachelor of Arts from Thiel College and completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University. He then completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the University of Cincinnati/Wellington and his orthopaedic residency at Doctor’s West Hospital in Columbus.
An avid sports fan (and especially of the Bengals, Buckeyes and Reds) and weight lifter, Dr. Finck has trained with the team physicians for the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Cincinnati Bearcats. He has also provided annual sports physicals for the Columbus and Cincinnati area athletes. In 2005, Dr. Finck was awarded the Community Service Medallion Award, honoring his volunteer time with high school athletes.
Dr. Finck works with all area athletes and is the team physician for the Zanesville Blue Devils. He also assists in covering the Muskingum University Muskies during their football season.
In joining Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville, Inc., Dr. Finck brings great expertise in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine to the practice.
Dr. Finck is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Osteopathic Association.
James V. Gasparine, M.D.
Sports Injuries, Concussions, Fracture Care and Osteoporosis
Dr. James Gasparine joined the Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville team in August 2011. Dr. Gasparine graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from West Virginia Wesleyan University. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from West Virginia University graduating in the top quarter of his class. Dr. Gasparine completed his family medicine residency at the University of South Florida, where his concentration was on nutrition, weight loss and athletic performance. He completed a sports medicine fellowship at West Virginia University.
Dr. Gasparine is board certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He works with multiple high schools and universities as a team physician and has worked with Division I collegiate athletics in various sports. His additional experience includes working in a medical tent for the 70.3 World Ironman and being a team physician for the arena football league team, Tampa Bay Storm.
Dr. Gasparine is trained to treat and understand the specific needs and concerns of athletes. His main focus is safely returning the athlete to “get back in the game”. Dr. Gasparine can customize a recovery plan that yields better results in a shorter amount of time.
Dr. Gasparine’s other areas of specialties include sports related concussions, sports injury prevention, osteoporosis and fracture care.
Dr. Gasparine is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. His hobbies include golf, power lifting, Jiu Jitsu and playing the piano. He is an active member of Westwood Baptist Church in Zanesville.
Christopher C. Bernett, PA-C
Christopher Bernett attended Pennsylvania State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in physiology in 1996. Bernett went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in physician assistance at D’Youville College in Buffalo, New York. Before joining Orthopaedic Associates of Zanesville in 2008, he practiced orthopaedics in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Bernett has 13 years of experience with total joint replacements, arthroscopies, hand, foot and ankle surgery, as well as trauma care.
Crista R. Berry, PA-C
Crista Berry is a certified physician assistant. In 2009 she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Following this, she obtained a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Marietta College. She has been employed at OAZ since 2011. Berry diagnoses and treats a variety of orthopaedic conditions, manages postoperative care and assists in surgeries.
Blake A. Smith, PA-C
Blake Smith is a board certified physician assistant and joined the OAZ team in 2014. Blake graduated from the College of Wooster in 2010 with his Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry. Then in 2013, he graduated from Cuyahoga Community College/Cleveland State University with his Masters of Science in Health Sciences. He is also a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery.
Sara A. Saft, PA-C
Sara Saft joined Orthopaedic Associates in 2014. As a board certified physician assistant, Saft has extensive experience in general orthopaedic care including fractures, osteoarthritis, total joint replacements and acute sports and non-sports related injuries. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Marietta College and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Stephen S. Koppes, PA-C
Stephen Koppes joined the Orthopaedic Associates team in 2011 and is a physician’s assistant. A proud graduate of The Ohio State University, Mr. Koppes also earned his masters of science in health sciences at Cuyahoga Community College/Cleveland State University. He has previously served as a certified athletic trainer in his spare time and has experience working with high school athletes. He recently became an avid runner who can be seen training for and competing in half marathons.
